On Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued its first order in the ongoing ‘AIFF vs FSDL’ case. The key direction was for the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to invite tenders for commercial rights. The move is aimed at ensuring that the 2025-26 season, including the Indian Super League (ISL) and the Super Cup, begins smoothly and without delay.

The court appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice L. Nageswara Rao to oversee the process. He has also been given the authority to appoint professionals to assist him. The primary objective is to ensure transparency and adhere to global best practices.

The court also praised Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) for giving up its commercial rights. Their decision to reach a collaborative resolution with AIFF was described as a “significant step in the evolution of Indian football”.

As noted in the order, the Supreme Court observed: “We have also recorded the agreement of FSDL as indicated at point no. 7 of the note extracted hereinabove in paragraph 4 of this order. We have no hesitation in recording that their collaborative effort is a significant step in the evolution of Indian football. This shared commitment will go a long way in institutionalising domestic, national and international events.”

However, the order did not include any information regarding the AIFF elections. The order regarding the Federation’s Constitution is expected to be released later this week or early next week.
