In a major relief for Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen and his brother Chirag Sen, the Supreme Court of India has officially quashed the FIR registered in December 2022 in Bengaluru that alleged document forgery related to age manipulation. The apex court’s decision brings a definitive end to the long-standing legal battle involving the Sen brothers, their family, and renowned coach U. Vimal Kumar.
The controversy began with a complaint filed by a private individual who accused Lakshya’s coach and the Sen family of falsifying age-related documents back in 2010. The complaint alleged that this was done to help the players qualify for age-restricted tournaments and obtain government benefits. These claims were reportedly backed by documents acquired through Right to Information (RTI) queries.
In February 2025, the Karnataka High Court refused to quash the FIR and allowed the investigation to proceed, citing enough prima facie evidence. In response, Lakshya Sen, his family members, and coach Kumar moved the Supreme Court, seeking relief from what they called unfounded and damaging allegations.
The Supreme Court had earlier stayed all further proceedings related to the case. Today’s verdict goes a step further by quashing the FIR entirely and dismissing the complaint against all the accused.
Lakshya Sen expressed his gratitude to the judiciary in a statement following the verdict.
“I respect the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s decision and am thankful that the matter has now been concluded. I had faith in the judiciary and am glad that it has brought clarity. My focus remains on badminton, and I’m committed to continuing my journey with full dedication. I appreciate the support I’ve received from well-wishers during this time.”
The Sen family also issued a joint statement.
“This has been a challenging time for our family but we always believed that the truth would come to light. We’re thankful to the Hon’ble Supreme Court for bringing closure to this matter. Lakshya and Chirag have always let their hard work speak for itself and with this chapter behind us, our full focus is on supporting them as they continue to grow, compete, and make the country proud.”
Coach U. Vimal Kumar welcomed the decision, saying.
“I’m happy that the Supreme Court has brought clarity to this issue. Lakshya has always shown great commitment and integrity, and now he can move ahead with full focus on his game. I believe he will continue to make the country proud.”
