India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, on Tuesday, provided a positive update on Shreyas Iyer as he revealed that members of the team have had conversations with him over phone while adding that he is recovering well. He also observed that the doctors in Sydney are taking complete care of the Indian ODI vice-captain.

Iyer is currently admitted in a Sydney hospital after injuring his lower left rib cage while taking a catch in the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. According to sources, Iyer has suffered traumatic splenic rupture with hemoperitoneum and had to be admitted to the ICU after internal bleeding. He is currently out of ICU, stable and is recovering well.

“When we got to know that he had an injury, I called him first. Then I got to know that he didn’t have a phone. Then I called our physio, Kamlesh Jain. He told me that he is stable. We have been talking for two days now. He has been replying. If he is replying on the phone, it means he is stable,” Suryakumar Yadav told reporters in Canberra. “The doctor is also there with him. So it’s looking good. I mean, he is good. He is talking. Everything is normal. But he said that he will take care of himself for a few more days. But he has been replying, talking to everyone.

“There is nothing to worry about. We are not doctors. So just looking at us from the outside. When he caught the catch, it felt normal. But none of us were there. After going inside, they felt you have to pay attention. Then he was rushed to the specialist. And then we were informed that this has happened,” Suryakumar explained before adding, “After that when we talked to him and when we started talking normally then it felt like it’s a little better now. Because doctors and physios have said that it was unfortunate whatever happened.

“It is very rare. But Shreyas is also rare. A rare thing happened with a rare talent. God has supported. He is recovering really well. Doctors are all supporting. BCCI is in full support. So he will recover soon. We will take him home with us.”

The five-T20I series against Australia is India’s first assignment since the Asia Cup where the Men in Blue defeated Pakistan in the final. One focal point of this series will be Suryakumar’s batting form. The Indian skipper has not scored a half-century in his last 15 innings and would be desperate to get going with the willow.

“I feel I have been working really hard. It’s not that I wasn’t working hard before. I am still working hard. I have had a good few sessions back home. Good 2-3 sessions here. So I am in a good space. I think that is really important,” he said. “Runs, it will come eventually. But I think working hard towards the team goal, it’s more important. What team wants from you in different situations. And I take one game at a time. And if it starts, then I think it will be a good thing.”

The Men in Blue have dropped plenty of catches of late. Though it has not cost them tournaments, the visitors would want to keep the butter-fingers away in the five-match series.

When quizzed about India’s sloppiness on the field, Suryakumar said: “According to me, there is only one department, fielding, where everyone comes together. Otherwise, everyone’s batting skill is different. Bowling skill is different. But there is only fielding where 11 people live together on the ground. So it is important to create an atmosphere there. Irrespective of what is going on in the match. Even if the opponent team is at the top, if you do good fielding, you can win the game. So it is very important to have fun on the ground. Because all these things reflect on the ground when you are in a pressure situation. Or when you know that the game is going on tight.”

“If you are a fielder you will go to catch. Catches will be missed. If you are a batsman, you will be out trying to score a run. If you are a bowler, you will go out and you will not get a wicket. All this is a part of the game. But according to me. What you do after that is more important. Today, it was an optional session. But today everyone came to have a fielding session. So that means the team is working towards something really special. We will have to work a little hard. If we want to be the best fielding unit in the world. Catches win matches. We are working hard,” he concluded.
