Suspended IPL an opportunity to prepare for England

The potential suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025 has sparked debates among cricket fans, but for India’s Test players gearing up for a gruelling five-match Test series against England in June 2025, this could be a golden opportunity. With chances that the IPL may not resume in a week’s time given the escalation on the Pakistan front, the tournament is likely to be shifted to the August-September window. With World Test Championship (WTC) points at stake and the challenge of English conditions looming, the break from IPL could provide a much-needed breather for the players.

India’s pace-bowling trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj form the backbone of the team’s Test attack. The IPL’s relentless schedule, with high-intensity matches and constant travel, often leaves them with little time to recover. The suspension, though not ideal, could be a blessing in disguise for the pacers. Bumrah, India’s pace maestro, has made a remarkable comeback from injury, but his workload remains a concern. The scars from the Australia tour are still there.

The IPL’s demanding T20 format, with its short, sharp spells, is known for taking a toll. Without the IPL, Bumrah would have an extended period to rest, rebuild his fitness, and tailor his training for the endurance required in Test cricket. This could ensure he arrives in England fresh and ready to lead India’s attack with his trademark precision.

Shami, another linchpin of India’s bowling unit, has also battled injuries in recent times. The physical toll of bowling long spells in Tests is immense. While he was struggling with form as well, the break would allow Shami to focus on preparing for the Dukes ball. A well-rested Shami could be India’s trump card against England’s punchy batting lineup. The same goes for other pacers like Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and Siraj.

For these bowlers, the suspension of IPL 2025 would mean more than just rest—it would provide time to train specifically for the Dukes ball and build stamina needed for a five-match series.

While the bowlers stand to gain physically, India’s batting stars – Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, among others – could opt for individual training sessions. Transitioning from the aggressive, high-octane T20 mindset of the IPL to the patience and discipline required in Tests can be challenging. For some batters, the option of featuring in a couple of games in the County Championship may also be open, in case the IPL is suspended further.

For someone like Kohli, the break could push him to train separately and get into the zone. After a dismal outing in Australia, he could dedicate time to practicing with the red ball, honing his defensive technique, and strategising against swing bowling, a hallmark of English conditions.

Beyond individual preparation, a suspended IPL would enable the Indian team to organise early training camps or bonding sessions. It would allow the new captain, Shubman Gill most likely, to soak it in before diving deep into the intricacies of being the India captain.

This break could enhance India’s chances of success in one of cricket’s toughest challenges, a Test series win in England, with India’s last success there coming in 2007.
