Team India have been hit by a significant blow ahead of the all-important T20 World Cup 2026 as Tilak Varma, the hero of the Asia Cup 2025 final, had to undergo surgery for testicular torsion and is expected to return to action in three to four weeks.
The timing of the injury is unfortunate for India as they are set to face New Zealand in a five-match T20I series before the mega tournament. Tilak is now in danger to be featured in the series.
While speaking to TOI, a BCCI source said: “He will take three weeks to recover from the injury. He may be fit in time for the fifth T20I against New Zealand on January 31 (at Thiruvananthapuram). He will surely be fit and available for the T20 World Cup.”
The left-handed batter felt a sudden and intense pain in the testicular region while featuring for Hyderabad in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy in Rajkot. He was immediately admitted to Gokul Hospital, where doctors diagnosed testicular torsion through scans and advised surgery. The procedure was carried out successfully, and the young batter is recovering well.
Saurashtra Cricket Association president Jaydev Shah is also closely monitoring Tilak’s recovery. Speaking to TOI, he said: “He was immediately rushed to the Gokul Hospital, where scans diagnosed him with testicular torsion, and doctors advised immediate surgery. Tilak subsequently underwent successful surgery yesterday and is now doing well. He will be out of the hospital today.”
Tilak has been an important part of India’s middle order following India’s triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup. In 2025, the 23-year-old played 20 matches and scored 567 runs in 18 innings at an average of 47.25 and a strike rate of 129.15. His tally includes four fifties, with a best score of 73.
All eyes will now be on his recovery and whether he will be fully fit and available for the T20 World Cup.
