Thailand Open 2025: Lakshya Sen Faces First-Round Exit

On Wednesday, India’s No. 1 men’s singles player, Lakshya Sen, got knocked out of the third round at the Thailand Open in the Nimibutr Stadium, Pathumwan, Thailand, against lower-ranked Nhat Nguyen of Ireland. The match went on for 80 minutes, and Lakshya lost by a scoreline of 18-21, 21-9, 17-21 in the BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament.

Lakshya had faced the Irishman twice before this game and won both matches. But this is the first time he has suffered a defeat against Nguyen.

The game started poorly for the Indian shuttler as his opponent took a five-point lead after the mid-game interval. Though Lakshya won four back-to-back points, he still lost the game 18-21.

Lakshya Sen faced a third first-round exit in 2025

Lakshya made a comeback in the second game and won it 21-9 to take the match into the decider. However, he lost momentum in the final game and went down 17-21, thus exiting the tournament. Fans on social media also shared their disappointment, as hopes were high for Lakshya.

In women’s singles, Aakarshi Kashyap and Unnati Hooda defeated their Japanese and Thai opponents, respectively and advanced to the next round.

Aakarshi beat the higher-ranked Kaoru Sugiyama in a close encounter by 21-16, 20-22, 22-20.

Unnati beat Thanmonwan Nithiittikrai 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in a match that went on for an hour.

The star pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand has their match later today. They are returning after a long injury break. Indian players have six more matches today in the first round.
