Barcelona’s Champions League nightmare continues. Six years after the 4-0 capitulation against Liverpool at Anfield, and half a decade after Bayern Munich thrashed them 8-2 in the Covid-19 season, their semi-final exit against Internazionale of Milan marked a new low and extended their wait to win the trophy a sixth time to an 11th year.
“I know that everyone’s disappointed now that we’re out, but it’s because we invested a lot in this match,” said Hansi Flick, their coach, at the post-match press conference. “We came back again, and I think some decisions, like the 50-50 were always for Inter, but it’s like that, we have to accept it. It’s football.”
Barcelona remain favourites to win the domestic double. Having already beaten Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, they lead their great rivals by four points in LaLiga with just four rounds of games remaining.

“I’m proud of my team, we gave everything, and sometimes you feel like it’s unfair because some decisions the referee made were not for our side, but it’s like that,” said Flick, who can still look back on a season that has restored Barcelona’s reputation in Europe.
Pedri, the midfielder, was also critical of the officiating while speaking to a Spanish radio station. “This isn’t the first time this has happened to us with this referee, and I think UEFA should look into it,” he said referencing a 3-3 draw in the group stage in 2022-23. “There are things that are hard to explain.
“There were many situations. Every 50-50 went their way, and on the penalty on Lamine [Yamal] – which was later called a foul – he didn’t give [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan a yellow card, which would’ve been his second.”
