India’s two modern-day greats, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have retired from T20Is and Tests. Now available only for ODIs, fans are hopeful the duo will feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, by that time, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit 40. India is scheduled to play 27 ODIs until the 2027 World Cup, and the path ahead might not be straightforward for the veteran batters.
Former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly shared his thoughts on the matter, acknowledging the challenge that lies ahead. “It won’t be easy. 15 games a year. I’ve got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. And they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game,” Ganguly told PTI in an interview, the teaser of which was released on 21 June.
Kohli and Rohit Played a Key Role in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 Triumph
Earlier this year, both Kohli and Rohit played pivotal roles in India’s Champions Trophy-winning campaign. Kohli once again showed his class, scoring 218 runs in the tournament at an average of 54.80. His tally included a composed century and a crucial fifty.
Rohit Sharma was equally influential. He amassed 180 runs in the competition and played a match-winning knock of 76 in the final against New Zealand. As the ODI format becomes their final frontier in international cricket, fans will closely watch how both players manage their game and fitness leading up to 2027.
