Day 4 of the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, South Korea, saw India bag three gold medals and one silver, and maintain their second position in the medals tally. It was a remarkable day for the Indian women, who claimed two gold medals and a silver.

Long-distance star Gulveer Singh clinched another gold medal. Young Pooja won a historic gold in the high jump, becoming the first Indian in 25 years to achieve this feat. Nandini Agaskara triumphed in heptathlon, securing another gold for India. Parul Chaudhary delivered a sensational performance in 3000m steeplechase, finishing second with a lifetime best and breaking her own national record once again.

India currently have 18 medals, including 8 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze. China are on top with 26 medals.

Sachin and Yashvir in javelin final

The day began with the men’s javelin throw qualifications, where India’s Sachin Yadav (79.62m) and Yashvir Singh(76.67m) secured their spots in the final. Tomorrow, they will face tough competition, including from Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who qualified with a massive throw of 86.34m in his very first attempt. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga (83.71m) and Sumedha Ranasinghe (81.33m) will also be strong contenders.

Men’s 4×100m relay team disqualified

India’s 4×100m men’s relay team faced a heartbreaking disqualification due to a baton exchange error. The quartet of Pranav, Ragul, Manikanta Hobildar and Amlan Borgohain had finished second in their heat, a position that would have ensured qualification for the final. However, the baton exchange between Pranav and Ragul occurred outside the takeover area during the first handover, leading to their disqualification.

Gulveer sets championship record.

After securing gold in 10,000m on Day 1, Naib Subedar Gulveer returned with another stellar performance, clinching gold in the 5000m event with a timing of 13:24.78. This is a new championship record, surpassing the decade-old mark of 13:34.47 set by Mohamed Al-Garni. Thailand’s Kieran Tuntivate finished a close second in 13:24.97. Nagiya Mori from Japan won bronze with 13:25.06.

Gulveer became only the third Indian to win gold in 5000m at the Asian Athletics Championships and just the second Indian in history to win two gold medals in a single edition of the championships. The first was G. Lakshmanan, who achieved the feat in 2017 by winning the 10,000m and 5000m events.

Historic medal for teenager Pooja

Nandini wins heptathlon gold

Nandini clinched gold in heptathlon with a personal best tally of 5941 points after a gruelling two-day competition. She became only the third Indian to win a heptathlon gold at the event. Nandini outscored China’s Liu Jingyi (5869) and Taiwan’s Cai Jian Chen (5608) to secure the top spot.
