Australia batter Tim David has been ruled out for the remainder of the ongoing Big Bash League season due to a hamstring injury after scans confirmed a Grade 2 strain.

David injured his right hamstring while taking a single during the group match between the Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers on Friday, which the Hurricanes won by four wickets.

The 29-year-old was clearly in pain when he retired hurt on 42 off 28 balls. On the advice of the medical staff, he was taken off the field.

The big-hitting David is “tracking to be available” for the T20 World Cup, which is set to begin on February 7.

“David’s rehabilitation timeline has him tracking to be available for selection for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” the Hurricanes said in a statement on social media.

Earlier in the year, David suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2025 and missed the final few matches, including the final against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad. That injury was to his left leg.

In all likelihood, the Grade 2 strain will require four to eight weeks of recovery. The World Cup begins in the first week of February, but Australia will play their first match in the second week. David is therefore likely to make the cut and be available for the opening game.

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are also expected to recover from their respective injury concerns, which would see Australia return to full strength.

The 2021 winners will face Ireland on February 11 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
