In the ever-growing world of Indian women’s cricket, the emergence of Titas Sadhu in 2023 stood out as a sign of resilience and raw talent coming to fruition. Honoured as one of RevSportz’s Women’s Athletes of the Year 2023, Titas’s remarkable rise is a narrative of triumphs and undeniable cricketing prowess.

Exactly a year after Jhulan Goswami bid adieu, Titas made her mark in the Asian Games in China. Her debut against Bangladesh in the semi-final saw her claim a wicket. Twenty-four hours later, in the final against Sri Lanka, her spell of 4-1-6-3 contributed significantly to India’s gold medal — a landmark achievement for the Women in Blue.

The buzz around Titas reached a crescendo during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction, where the Delhi Capitals secured her services for Rs 25 lakh. While she didn’t get a game in the tournament, her inclusion alongside global cricketing luminaries underscored the immense promise she held.

Unlike her contemporaries, who embraced cricket in their formative years, Titas’s story is one of late discovery. She fell in love with the game at the age of 13. Born into a cricket-centric environment, with her father Ranadeep running a cricket academy in Chinsurah in West Bengal, her cricketing odyssey commenced on a rainy day when she was handed a tennis ball and asked to bowl. Drawn to swimming, running, and athletics, cricket wasn’t her first choice. However, destiny intervened, and she found herself immersed in the world of cricket.

Her senior Bengal debut happened in the 2020-21 season when cricket resumed after the COVID-19 pandemic. But there were initial setbacks. She was dropped from the XI after two games. However, her determination saw her reclaim her spot and establish herself as a formidable force on both the national and international stages.

Titas’s global breakthrough came in the inaugural ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in 2023. Her pivotal role in the final against England earned her the Player of the Match award. Known for generating pace, and swing, especially lethal in-swingers, Titas showcased her talent on the grandest stage.

Her journey is a testament to her discipline and resilience. Her temperament was on full display in that final against England. Bouncing back from setbacks, her standout performances underscore her mental fortitude, setting her apart in the competitive world of professional cricket. She was rewarded with two more T20I games, in the recently concluded three-match series against England in Mumbai. She was also included in the Test side.

As Titas continues to chart her own course, her story serves as a wellspring of inspiration for aspiring cricketers. RevSportz’s acknowledgement as one of the Women’s Athletes of the Year 2023 is a fitting accolade for this rising sensation. Rest assured, the cricketing world will see and hear a lot more of Titas in 2024 and beyond.
