Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee following an on-field incident during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 match between Dindigul Dragons and iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday, June 8 in Coimbatore.

Ashwin, who was playing his second game of the tournament, was involved in a heated exchange with on-field umpire Venkatesan Krithika. The altercation occurred after he was adjudged out in the fifth over of the innings. Batting on 18, Ashwin attempted a sweep shot off R Sai Kishore’s bowlinh but missed, and the ball was adjudged to have hit his pad. As the ball rolled towards short fine leg, Ashwin tried to sneak a single, only to see the umpire raise her finger for LBW.

With no DRS available in the league, the Dindigul Dragons skipper reluctantly walked back to the pavilion, visibly displeased. On his way out, he struck his pad with the bat in frustration—an act that has led to the disciplinary action.

In his short innings, Ashwin smashed 18 runs off 11 balls, including two boundaries and a six. His dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse for the Dindigul Dragons, who crumbled from 61/1 to 93 all out in 16.2 overs. Shivam Singh was the top scorer with 30 off 27 balls, striking four fours and a six, while R K Jayant was the only other batter to reach double figures.

For Tiruppur, Esakkimuthu A starred with the ball, claiming four wickets, while Mathivannan chipped in with three. This marked Dindigul Dragons’ first defeat of the season.

Earlier in the tournament opener, the Dragons had comfortably defeated Lyca Kovai Kings by seven wickets, thanks to Shivam’s unbeaten 82 off 50 balls. Ashwin had also impressed in that game, taking two wickets.

Ashwin will be seen in action on 14 June when Dindigul Dragons face Siechem Madurai Panthers at the SCG Cricket Ground in Salem.
