Kapil Dev, India’s legendary World Cup-winning captain, believes that it is premature to compare the young talent of Shubman Gill to iconic batters like Sachin Tendulkar and other greats of Indian cricket. While Gill has showcased remarkable form this year, scoring centuries across formats and continuing his excellence in the IPL season, Kapil emphasised that it was still too early to draw comparisons.
“Sunil Gavaskar came, Sachin Tendulkar came, then Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and now with the kind of batting he is showing, it appears that Shubman Gill is following their footsteps,” said Kapil in an interaction with ABP News. “But I will like to give him another season (before making big claims). He definitely has the talent and ability but he needs more maturity.
“If he plays another season like this, there is no doubt that he too could be included in the list of great players. But I would not like to take him to that league currently. Maybe he needs to give one more year. It’s too early (to say).”
With an impressive tally of 851 runs in 16 matches at an outstanding average of 60.79, Gill currently leads the race for the IPL’s Orange Cap, awarded to the tournament’s top run-scorer.
