Preview of Today’s Matches

Iga Swiatek vs. Anastasia Potapova

Swiatek enters her Round 4 match with a formidable winning streak. The top seed and defending champion has won her last 15 matches and extended her Roland Garros streak to 17 victories. Swiatek’s latest triumph came against Marie Bouzkova, where she displayed her dominance with a 6-4, 6-2 victory, hitting 34 winners and only 19 unforced errors. The Pole, who celebrated her 23rd birthday on Friday, had a close call earlier in the tournament against Naomi Osaka but managed to save match points and come back from a 2-5 deficit in the final set.

Swiatek’s record at Roland Garros is impressive, with no other woman in the last 25 years making the second week in each of their first six appearances. She holds a 7-7 record in fourth rounds at majors but has a 4-1 record in Paris, where she has already won three titles. Today, she faces Potapova, who is making her first appearance in the second week of a major. Potapova’s journey has been arduous, with a nearly three-hour battle against Wang Xinyu in the third round, eventually winning 7-5, 6-7, 6-4. Potapova, who arrived in Paris without consecutive wins since March, has had a tricky path, but her resilience will be tested against Swiatek.

The head-to-head record is 0-0, and although seven of Swiatek’s 16 career losses in Grand Slams have come in the fourth round, she remains a heavy favourite. Potapova will need to produce an extraordinary performance to unseat the reigning champion.

Coco Gauff vs. Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Gauff continues to impress at Roland Garros, reaching the second week for the fourth consecutive year. The third seed has advanced with three straight-set wins, including a solid 6-2, 6-4 victory over Dayana Yastremska in the third round. Gauff, who was the runner-up in 2022, has shown consistent form, making three of her six Grand Slam quarterfinals in the past three editions of Roland Garros. She stands 6-4 in fourth-round matches at majors, with a strong recent performance in Melbourne, where she reached the semifinals.

Gauff’s opponent, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, has had a breakthrough tournament. Cocciaretto defeated two seeded players in the first week, including a comeback win over 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia and a victory against 17th seed. Liudmila Samsonova. Cocciaretto’s success on clay is notable, having won her maiden WTA title on the surface in Lausanne last year and reaching the quarterfinals in Rabat recently.

The head-to-head record favors Gauff, who leads 2-0, having won both encounters in straight sets. However, Cocciaretto pushed Gauff to a tiebreak in Guadalajara in 2022 and managed to break her five times in Dubai this year. Despite these challenges, Gauff’s experience and past performance at Roland Garros give her the edge in this matchup.
