India U19 captain Ayush Mhatre praised Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for playing a mature innings of 72, which contributed to the team’s win against Bangladesh U19 on Saturday, January 17.
In their second U19 World Cup match, India were in a spot of bother after losing two quick wickets, including Mhatre. Sooryavanshi, soaking up the pressure, played a sensible innings without changing his style of play. Mhatre was impressed with the way his opening partner performed under pressure.
“(Sooryavanshi) showed the maturity that he’s got and batted really brilliantly,” Mhatre said, as quoted by the ICC. “He showed patience as well; the team needed him to stay there, and he did.”
Both captains opted to field first at the start of the match due to the dampness in the wicket, which made batting tougher for the Indian batters during the first ten overs of the innings.
“It was initially tough conditions because there was some stickiness in the wicket and the ball was coming on a little slower, especially from a back-of-a-length delivery, so there was some difficulty,” he added.
Abhigyan Kundu once again emerged as India’s top scorer with an 80-run knock. Kanishk Chouhan also played a breezy innings of 28 towards the end. India posted a total of 238, which was reduced to a target of 165 in 29 overs under the DLS method. Bangladesh failed to chase it down, losing the match by 18 runs.
“But the way that (Abhigyan Kundu and Sooryavanshi) batted, and later in the innings, the way (Kanishk Chouhan) played, was very good,” Mhatre concluded.
India will play their final group match against New Zealand on January 24.
