A unicorn named Finnie has been unveiled as the official mascot for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with just a year to go until the city welcomes athletes from across the globe.
The character, inspired by Scotland’s national animal, was designed with the input of 76 children from 24 Glasgow schools. She takes her name from the iconic Finnieston Crane and was introduced to the public from its very top.
Finnie embodies Glasgow’s humour, history, and culture. Her horn mimics the traffic cone often seen atop the Duke of Wellington statue, while her silver shoes honour the city’s shipbuilding legacy. The unicorn’s purple mane reflects the lights of the Hydro arena, and stars on her face represent the Barrowland Ballroom. A bracelet designed by schoolchildren and a heart-shaped gesture complete her friendly persona.
“It’s been amazing to help create the mascot,” said 11-year-old Maskeen Bhullar from St Patrick’s Primary. “It represents my city and has made me even more determined to become an athlete one day.”
Finnie’s role will extend far beyond the stadiums. She will travel across Scotland, engaging communities and rallying excitement in the lead-up to the Games.
Glasgow 2026 CEO Phil Batty said: “Finnie represents fun, friendliness and a bit of magic. She’s at the heart of what these Games are about.”
First Minister John Swinney hailed the mascot as a symbol of hope and creativity. “It’s a joyful, empathetic mascot created by Glasgow’s young people, and it brings together some of the city’s most iconic symbols,” he said.
Swinney also confirmed preparations are on track. “The Games are on budget, and improvements to venues like Scotstoun Stadium are already underway,” he added.
