The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) has named Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the vice-captain of the team for the first two rounds of the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season, which kicks off on October 15. Sakibul Gani will lead the 15-member side.

Just two days ahead of the domestic season, the BCA announced its squad following a delay caused by a last-minute effort to appoint a selector on an ad hoc basis. This appointment was made to complete a two-member panel, as instructed by the BCCI, which has urged the BCA to form a full five-member selection committee as soon as possible.

The 14-year-old batting sensation has no prior experience of being part of a leadership group. Even at the Under-19 level, Vihaan Malhotra currently serves as the deputy to Ayush Mhatre, who in turn leads the U19 men’s team. For the England tour, wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu was the vice-captain.

Since making his Ranji Trophy debut, at the age of 13 against Mumbai in Patna, Suryavanshi has played just five first-class matches, scoring 100 runs with a personal best of 41. In contrast, his performances for India U19 have been impressive. Last year, he made headlines with a 58-ball century against Australia U19 in a four-day game. More recently, against the same opposition, the southpaw smashed 113 runs. India U19 won the two-match multi-day series, with Suryavanshi scoring 133 runs across three innings.

Suryavanshi is unlikely to be available for the entire Ranji Trophy season, as he remains a strong contender for a place in India’s squad for the U19 World Cup, scheduled for early 2026.

Bihar will open their campaign against Arunachal Pradesh in Patna, followed by a clash with Manipur in Nadiad starting October.
