Former India pacer Varun Aaron has been named the new bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the franchise announced via social media on Monday, July 14. The 35-year-old takes over the role from former New Zealand cricketer James Franklin.

Franklin had served as SRH’s bowling coach for the past two IPL seasons (2024 and 2025) after South African legend Dale Steyn stepped down ahead of the 2024 campaign due to personal reasons. Franklin is now expected to be reassigned to a different position within the franchise.

The Sunrisers made the announcement with a post on X (formerly Twitter) that read: “A fiery addition to our coaching staff! Welcome Varun Aaron as our new bowling coach.”

Hailing from Jharkhand, Aaron announced his retirement from representative cricket earlier this year and has since been active in broadcasting. This marks his first coaching role with any team following his retirement.

Renowned for his raw pace, Aaron burst onto the scene as one of India’s fastest bowlers, famously clocking 153 kph during the 2010–11 Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Gujarat. Despite his promise, injuries and inconsistency limited his international career to just 18 matches — nine Tests and nine ODIs — in which he took 29 wickets

Over the course of his IPL career, Aaron represented six franchises — Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab, and Gujarat Titans. Across nine seasons from 2011 to 2022, he played 52 matches, claiming 44 wickets at an economy rate of 8.93. His final IPL appearance came in 2022 as part of Gujarat Titans’ title-winning campaign.

Aaron now joins a coaching group headed by Sunrisers’ head coach Daniel Vettori as the team looks to build for the next year’s IPL after a disappointing previous season.
