Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes Varun Chakravarthy could be a crucial player in India’s bid to defend their T20 World Cup title at home. Ganguly feels India’s strong spin attack can make the difference, especially with Chakravarthy, who has emerged as one of the most important bowlers in the squad.
In an interaction with PTI, Ganguly highlighted Chakravarthy’s importance to the team. “Yeah, nothing (home WC) gets bigger than that, and India is always my favourite team. They have a strong spin attack and if Chakravarthy is fit then it’s good for India,” Ganguly said.
India’s squad includes spinners like Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, giving the team several options across different match situations. Among all the spinners in the squad, Chakravarthy stands out as the standout performer, as he has been the No. 1 T20 bowler for a long time. He has taken 55 wickets in 33 T20I matches at an economy rate of 6.95.
Recently, Chakravarthy impressed against South Africa by claiming 10 wickets in a four-match series. He finished as the highest wicket-taker of the series with an economy rate of 7.46.
India will play their final T20I series before the World Cup against New Zealand, starting January 21. India will begin their World Cup campaign against the United States on February 7 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
