Former chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has questioned the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for dropping Yashasvi Jaiswal from the World Cup squad.
When India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, Jaiswal was part of the squad as a reserve batter. However, he has been overlooked since then. Jaiswal last played T20Is in Sri Lanka in July 2024. His last five T20I scores read 93, 12, 40, 30 and 10, all as an opener.
Before the squad announcement, Jaiswal played three matches for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The southpaw scored 145 runs in three innings, which included a century against Haryana.
“It is unfortunate that Yashasvi is being left out time and again through no fault of his. He has been in tremendous form across all formats of the game, and I don’t know what else he has to do to get into the team,” Vengsarkar told PTI. “Nobody should leave a match-winner out of the team.”
Shubman Gill, who was appointed India’s vice-captain, was also dropped, with Ishan Kishan earning a long-awaited recall on the back of a sensational run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
When asked what he would have told Jaiswal had he been the chairman of selectors, Vengsarkar said: “I wouldn’t have told him anything because I wouldn’t have dropped him in the first place.”
Jaiswal, who was hospitalised in Pune with acute gastroenteritis, has recovered and is likely to join Mumbai for the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy ahead of the ODI series against New Zealand.
