Ahead of the upcoming domestic season, Vijay Shankar has decided to leave Tamil Nadu after 13 years in order to play for Tripura. The ongoing Buchi Babu Tournament will be Shankar’s last for Tamil Nadu.
Shankar, who made his debut at senior level in the 2011–12 season, had requested a No Objection Certificate from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), which he has received. However, the seam-bowling all-rounder is yet to receive the letter of approval from the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA).
“I have obtained the NOC from TNCA but am yet to receive confirmation from the Tripura Cricket Association. I will be able to officially announce my switch once I get the formal approval letter from Tripura,” said Shankar, speaking to Cricbuzz on Tuesday.
Shankar is the second player to leave Tamil Nadu, after Baba Aparajith joined Kerala last year. Hanuma Vihari has also confirmed his move to Tripura.
The 34-year-old cricketer, who has played 21 matches for India across T20Is and ODIs, is currently in Chennai, taking part in the ongoing Buchi Babu Tournament. After being ‘rested’ for the second round against Maharashtra, Shankar made the decision to move. He also had to warm the bench for a few games last season.
Speaking on Shankar’s decision, head coach M. Senthilnathan said, “He has made immense contributions to TN cricket, and it is appreciated by one and all. Now that he has decided to move on from the state team, we will miss him and wish him the best. At the same time, we have a good talent pool. This now opens up a slot for some of the younger players to grab the opportunity and do well for the team.”
Tripura will compete in the Elite division across all three tournaments — the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. With the likes of Vihari and Shankar, both of whom have represented India, Tripura cricket will benefit significantly.
