Just days after Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket, Middlesex County Cricket Club has expressed interest in bringing the Indian star to England for the County Championship or the Metro Bank Cup, the country’s premier domestic one-day competition.

As reported by The Guardian, Middlesex—who have previously signed global icons like AB de Villiers and Kane Williamson—are keen to initiate discussions with Kohli. Although BCCI-contracted players are barred from overseas T20 leagues like The Hundred and T20 Blast, Kohli is eligible to play in first-class and List A formats in England, as some Indian players have done before.

Middlesex ‘Interested’ to rope in Kohli

Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said: “Virat Kohli is the most iconic player of his generation, so of course we’re interested in having that conversation.”

Kohli’s links to London add weight to the possibility—he reportedly owns a home in the city, which could make a stint with the Lord’s-based club more feasible. Should the move materialise, it would mark one of Middlesex’s most significant overseas signings ever. Kohli is yet to score a century at Lord’s, and a county spell could offer him the chance to change that.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time an English county has tried to sign him. In 2018, Surrey were close to securing Kohli’s services ahead of India’s tour of England. However, a neck injury forced him to withdraw, and the deal never came to fruition.
