India spinner Varun Chakaravarthy named Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and Abhishek Sharma as the toughest batters he has bowled to. In an episode of Breakfast With Champions, he also mentioned that his India teammate Abhishek Sharma is one of the youngsters who has recently joined that list.
“Chris Gayle, Virat (Kohli), and of late, it’s been Abhishek Sharma — your previous guest,” he said.
Chakaravarthy is part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, while Abhishek plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He praised Abhishek for his explosive form and expressed hope that the left-hander continues his current run for India for a long time.
“You should tell him to be soft on the bowlers in the nets. But touch wood, he keeps batting like this for India — maybe just not for SRH,” said Chakaravarthy.
The 34-year-old started his international career relatively late, making his debut at the age of 30 in 2021 against Sri Lanka in a T20I match. He has been a consistent performer for KKR and is one of the pillars of their bowling attack. For the last two years, the leg-break bowler has been a regular member of the T20I team, and he was recently part of the Asia Cup 2025 squad that won the title.
Speaking about the team’s recent success, Chakaravarthy said: “I knew that we would win all the games. We are the number one team in the world. The cup can be taken away, but we are champions.”
