Former India captain Virat Kohli congratulated the Shubman Gill-led Indian team on their first-ever win at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, after 18 failed attempts.
At the forefront of India’s historic victory was their skipper, Gill, who recorded the highest score of his career — 269 runs off 387 balls, including 30 fours and three sixes, in the first innings. He followed it up with another century, scoring 161 runs off 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes, at a strike rate of 99.38. Gill also broke the record for the most runs scored by an Indian in a Test match, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s 54-year-old milestone.
Kohli praised Gill and the bowling heroes — Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep. After a disappointing outing in the first match, Siraj made a strong comeback in the second, claiming six wickets in the first innings. Akash Deep, returning to the side after a long gap, picked up four wickets in the first innings and improved his performance in the second with six more, completing a ten-wicket haul in the match.
Kohli shared a post on social media, stating: “Great victory for India at Edgbaston. Fearless and kept pushing England to the wall. Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field, and impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch.”
Overall, it was a brilliant all-round performance by India at Edgbaston, helping them level the series 1–1.
