Clouds still hover over Virat Kohli’s ODI future as, according to RevSportz’s sources, chief selector Ajit Agarkar recently got in touch with the veteran batter regarding his plans in the 50-over format.

These sources indicated that there was some pessimism due to the lack of communication from Kohli’s end. The team management reportedly wanted both Rohit Sharma and Kohli to feature in the India A 50-over series against Australia A.

Currently, Australia A are touring India. After the ongoing second unofficial Test, India A will play Australia A in three 50-over matches. Expectations were high that both the current and former ODI skippers would be included in the squad, especially since neither has played competitive cricket since IPL 2025.

Having already retired from T20Is in 2024 and from Test cricket just before the recent England tour, the ODI format remains the only one available for both players. Recently, the BCCI shared footage of Rohit Sharma practicing alongside KL Rahul at the board’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, suggesting that the current ODI captain is preparing hard for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19.

However, with this new report, doubts remain over Kohli’s future, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup quite distant on the horizon.

Both Rohit and Kohli last appeared in India colours on March 9 earlier this year, when the Men in Blue defeated New Zealand to lift the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai.
