A major controversy erupted during the Men’s Vitality Blast clash between Surrey and Middlesex at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 16, 2025. Two third-umpire decisions during Middlesex’s innings sparked confusion and outrage among fans.

The first incident occurred in the 12th over of Middlesex’s innings. Will Jacks bowled a delivery outside the off-stump, and Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy attempted a reverse sweep but missed. The wicketkeeper quickly removed the bails and appealed for a stumping.

The on-field umpire referred the decision to the third umpire, Nigel Llong. Replays clearly showed that du Plooy’s foot was behind the crease when the bails were dislodged. However, to everyone’s astonishment, the big screen displayed the “OUT” signal. The decision was quickly corrected, as commentators later explained that while Llong had indeed ruled the batter not out, the technician responsible for pressing the on-screen button mistakenly hit the ‘OUT’ option. Though du Plooy survived, the incident caused confusion and frustration among spectators and players.

The second controversy came just two overs later. On the third ball of the 14th over, Stephen Eskinazi tapped the ball and set off for a quick single. A direct hit followed, and replays showed du Plooy had safely made it into the crease. Yet again, the big screen showed “OUT,” and this time the decision was not reversed. Du Plooy had to walk back, visibly unhappy with the verdict.

Despite the chaos, Surrey held their nerve to secure a narrow win. They posted a strong total of 189/9, powered by Will Jacks’ 52 off 36 balls and a late flourish from Tom Curran, who smashed 47 off just 22 balls. Ryan Higgins starred with the ball for Middlesex, claiming four wickets. In response, Middlesex fell short by eight runs, finishing at 181/6. Eskinazi top-scored with 53 off 38 balls, but Chris Jordan’s two crucial wickets helped Surrey seal the win.
