In a fiercely contested IPL 2025 clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) hosted Gujarat Titans (GT) in a match that saw both brilliance and controversy.
After losing two early wickets, GT found momentum through Washington Sundar and captain Shubman Gill, who stitched together a crucial partnership. Sundar, promoted up the order, was looking in fine touch and had raced to 49 off just 29 deliveries. But on the first ball of the 14th over, a moment of controversy unfolded.
Mohammed Shami bowled a short ball outside off, which Sundar sliced towards deep point. Fielder Aniket Verma charged in and claimed a low catch, diving forward. The on-field umpires, unsure about the catch’s cleanliness, referred the decision to the third umpire. After watching several replays, the third umpire ruled it a fair catch, stating that Verma’s fingers were underneath the ball.
“Coach asked me to go in at four after we lost a couple of wickets early.” – Washington Sundar
The decision stunned both Sundar and Shubman, with visible disappointment on their faces. Sundar narrowly missed what would have been his maiden IPL fifty, walking off on 49. Despite the controversy, the Titans didn’t let the moment shift the momentum. Shubman Gill anchored the chase calmly, finishing unbeaten on 61 off 43 balls. He was well-supported by Sherfane Rutherford, who provided the finishing touch with a fiery 35 not out of just 16 deliveries.
GT reached the target in 16.4 overs, strengthening their position in the points table with another convincing win. During the post-match presentation, Washington Sundar reflected on his role in the game and the opportunity he was given. “Coach asked me to go in at four after we lost a couple of wickets early. Great opportunity for me and went well for me,” he said.
