The draft for the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) Season 11 has been completed, with all eight teams strengthening their squads by adding top international talents ahead of the new season.
Sydney Sixers brought in England’s Sophia Dunkley through the draft and secured New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr as their pre-signing. Adelaide Strikers, who had already sealed the signing of South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt before the draft, added England stars Sophie Ecclestone and Tammy Beaumont during the draft.
Brisbane Heat used their retention pick to keep India’s Jemimah Rodrigues, who ended up being the only Indian player to be drafted this season. They also picked up Chinelle Henry and Nadine de Klerk, further bolstering their line-up.
Hobart Hurricanes made headlines by signing England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and retaining Danni Wyatt-Hodge. Melbourne Stars added a strong mix of experience and youth with all-rounders Marizanne Kapp and Dani Gibson, along with wicketkeeper Amy Jones.
Sydney Thunder assembled a fantastic trio, retaining former England skipper Heather Knight and bringing in Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and South Africa speedster Shabnim Ismail.
Melbourne Renegades faced a setback before the draft, as their West Indies all-rounder and captain, Hayley Matthew,s withdrew from the season due to an upcoming shoulder surgery. In response, they retained veteran Windies star Deandra Dottin and drafted England’s Alice Capsey.
New Zealand’s Sophie Devine will continue her long stint with Perth Scorchers, entering her sixth consecutive WBBL season since 2020/21. The Scorchers also picked Chloe Tryon and Paige Scholfield to round off their international signings.
