The Sydney Sixers will have a new head coach this summer to guide them in the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). They will now be led by a familiar face, Matthew Mott, who replaces Charlotte Edwards in the role. The former head coach of the Australian women’s team has signed a two-year contract with the Sixers. In addition to leading the women’s side, Mott is also currently serving as assistant coach to the men’s BBL team under Greg Shipperd.
During Mott’s previous tenure with the Australian women’s team, the side enjoyed immense success. They won the T20 World Cups in 2018 and 2020, followed by the 50-over World Cup in 2022. After his stint with the women’s team, Mott also coached the men’s side, guiding them to the 2022 T20 World Cup final, after which he was let go from the role.
Charlotte Edwards, now succeeded by Mott, stepped down from her position with the Sixers last month to take up her new role as head coach of the England women’s team.
What’s Next for the Sixers?
The Sixers have not won a WBBL title since the 2017–18 season. Mott, returning to the setup, expressed his eagerness to lead the team back to success. “I’m looking forward to reconnecting with them – as well as working with some of the younger talent – as we push to secure another WBBL title,” he said. The Sixers will also benefit from having the first draft pick in the upcoming WBBL season.
Before turning his full attention to the WBBL, Mott is currently engaged as the assistant coach of the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League.
