WCL 2025: Back-to-back Century for AB de Villiers as South Africa Champions dominate Australia Champions

AB de Villiers put on a brilliant display of batting as South Africa Champions beat Australia Champions by a big margin of 95 runs. After smashing an unbeaten 116 against England Champions in his last match, de Villiers smashed 123 off 46 balls as South Africa posted 241/6 in 20 overs.

Coming to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa Champions’ openers JJ Smuts and de Villiers laid a foundation for the big score with their 187-run partnership from just 81 balls for the first wicket. de Villiers was extraordinary and gave no respite to the bowlers. His innings took off with a six and a four off Brett Lee over long-off and deep square leg respectively.

He scored 17 runs off the eighth over bowled by Peter Siddle and 18 runs off the 10th over bowled by Daniel Christian. He completed his hundred on the first ball of the 13th over bowled by D’Arcy Short in just 39 balls. He scored four fours and a six in that over.

But finally, Siddle got him out. He scored 123 at a staggering strike rate of 267.39. His innings included 15 fours and eight sixes.

In reply, none of the Australia Champions batters could get a fifty except Ben Cutting’s unbeaten 59 off 29, and the South African side won the match easily.

De Villiers, the Player of the Match, is in excellent form in this WCL and this was his second century. Apart from these two tons, against India Champions also, he was unbeaten on 61. He is currently the leading run-scorer with 305 runs in four matches, at an average of 152.50. However, both these teams have qualified for the semi-finals.

With this win, South Africa Champions are the table toppers as of now, with eight points in five games and a net run rate of +2.595, while the Aussies are in third spot with five points in four games and a net run rate of +0.287.
