Germany’s Bayern Munich were left stunned by Portugal’s Benfica after suffering a 1-0 defeat in their final Group C match at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. After scoring 12 goals and conceding just one across their previous two games, Bayern were unable to break through Benfica’s defence. The result has left head coach Vincent Kompany with a few concerns heading into the knockout stage.
Speaking to the official Bayern Munich website after the match, Kompany praised his players for their effort but admitted he was worried about the overall flow of the game.
“I have great respect for every player today. They all fought hard for 90 minutes. To be honest, I was a little apprehensive regarding the heat and the pitch. I wasn’t worried we wouldn’t win, I was more concerned with the flow of the game. Nevertheless, I was confident going into the second half. We created many chances and played really well after the break. But that’s football. If you don’t use one-on-one situations with the keeper or other opportunities to score, you pay the price.”
“We’re not taking any negatives into that game” – Kompany on facing Flamengo
Despite the defeat, Bayern finished second in Group C with six points from three games and booked their spot in the Round of 16, where they will face Group D toppers Flamengo of Brazil on 30 June in Miami.
Looking ahead to that match, Kompany stressed the need to avoid a repeat of the mistakes made against Benfica.
“Now, we’re playing against Flamengo on Sunday in Miami. We’re not taking any negatives into that game. We know we can create opportunities to score. We were dominant and created more chances, but we didn’t win. We can’t let that happen in the next rounds, but we’re taking a lot of momentum into the next game anyway.”
