Barcelona’s epic come-from-behind 4-3 win over Real Madrid may have been a feast for the neutral, but Hansi Flick, their coach, was far from satisfied with the defensive frailties that allowed Kylian Mbappe to score a hat-trick. The win took Barcelona to within touching distance of the LaLiga crown – seven points ahead with three games to play – and marked a fourth El Clasico success of the season.
“We don’t feel like champions,” said Flick, whose side came from 2-0 down to lead 4-2 before nearly conceding a last-gasp equaliser. “I am going to have to check my heart. It would be easy to say that the tactic is to score four if they score three. We have to improve a lot defensively. When we press, it is fine. But this gets complicated when we make mistakes.”
Barcelona have scored 95 goals in LaLiga, in addition to the 43 they managed in the UEFA Champions League, but this was a third consecutive big game – after the 3-3 and 3-4 games against Inter Milan – where Barcelona had conceded at least thrice. “You have to be the ones to say that,” said Flick when asked if his team was the most entertaining to watch. “I suffer a lot. I hope we can do things better and make fewer errors.”
