Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka believes that they have to find the perfect combination for their team before the upcoming ICC T20I World Cup, where they will be one of the host nations.

After the loss to Pakistan which practically ended Sri Lanka’s chances of making the Asia Cup final, Asalanka told reporters: “We’ve had lots of issues with our combinations, and that’s something we have to get right ahead of the World Cup.”

In Tuesday’s Super Four match, Sri Lanka made two changes. Chamika Karunaratne and Maheesh Theekshana came in for Dunith Wellalage and Kamil Mishara. But after batting first, Sri Lanka only managed to score 133/8 in their 20 overs.

“We tried going with an extra bowler today, but we lost a specialist batsman because of that, and didn’t score the runs we needed,” said Asalanka. “Other times we’ve played an extra batsman and couldn’t defend a score with the ball.”

Sri Lanka lost their first Super Four match to Bangladesh by four wickets, and five-wicket defeat to Pakistan leaves them bottom of the table with a match against India to come.

Sri Lanka’s skipper also emphasised the need to put big totals on the board, and also mentioned the areas they could get better at.

“We need to figure out how to consistently score 180 to 200, and also how to use the part-time bowlers – myself, Dasun, Kamindu Mendis- better,” he said. “Those are things we need to improve in the future.”
