
Matthew Breetzke made his debut in the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL) today for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The 26-year-old batter began his IPL career with a single, but it was on the third and fifth deliveries he faced that he showcased his potential. He whipped the third ball in front of square on the leg side for a four. On the fifth delivery, he cleared his front leg and launched it over long-on for a six.
His innings was short-lived, however, as he attempted to drive a low full toss from Nuwan Thushara, missed it completely, and was bowled. He scored 14 runs off 12 balls at a strike rate of 116.67. His brief stay at the crease included one boundary and one six.

Breetzke hails from South Africa and made his international debut in September 2023. He earned his Test cap on 21 October 2024, against Bangladesh. His One Day International (ODI) debut came against New Zealand on 10 February, and since then, he has played two ODIs, scoring 233 runs at an average of 116.5, with a highest score of 150.
He made his T20I debut against Australia on 3 September 2023 and has since featured in 10 T20Is, scoring 151 runs at an average of 16.77, including one half-century. He was bought by LSG in the IPL auction for Rs 75 lakhs.
