Fast bowler Zakary Foulkes picked up four wickets on day 1 of the second Test match against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.
On Test debut, Foulkes impressed everyone with some fantastic bowling to stun the Zimbabwe batting line-up in the first innings. He ran through the Zimbabwe middle order—taking the three big wickets of Sean Williams, Craig Ervine, and Sikandar Raza. He also picked up the wicket of Trevor Gwandu to complete a four-wicket haul in the first innings.
Foulkes’ maiden Test wicket came in the form of Williams in the 18th over of the first innings. Williams was caught by Will Young at second slip. Then he removed Ervine. The Zimbabwe skipper went for a drive but was again caught at second slip by Young. Raza was caught at leg gully by Rachin Ravindra. Gwandu was trapped LBW. He finished with figures of 4/38 in 16 overs. Matthew Fisher and Jacob Duffy also made their respective Test debuts with Foulkes but the 23-year-old pacer outshined both of them.
Born in Christchurch, Foulkes made his debut for New Zealand in a T20I match against Pakistan. Since then, he has played 13 T20Is for New Zealand and has taken 15 wickets at an average of 24.46 and an economy rate of 7.97. His best bowling figures in T20Is- 3/20. The right-arm pacer also played one ODI against Sri Lanka in Pallekele last year, but the match was called off due to rain.
At the first-class level, he has played 19 matches, picking up 57 wickets. He is a handy batter too, having scored 544 runs in 30 innings from those 19 matches at an average of 19.42, which includes three fifties, with a highest score of an unbeaten 75.
