Why is it that we call her an inspiration? Why is Sania Mirza different?

I have forever said I love speaking to Sania Mirza. This episode of BWB was yet another occasion when she stood out in the one hour long conversation.

Sample this- She said she doesn’t like to cook and instead preferred hitting the forehand. “Why is that a problem? Why is it that I will be called a rebel just because I want to do things my way? What is rebellious in it? Why has society created certain behavioural boxes and if you don’t fit you are branded a rebel?” she asked.

#2 Be your own cheerleader she said. If no one wants to back you, back yourself.

Simple words but words that leave a profound impact.

#3 She spoke in detail about the challenges the female body faces and explained why women’s tennis is far more fickle than men. Why there are more upsets perhaps. She explained how she has had to twice take medication each day during her menstrual cycle because of extreme cramps and how such things should be openly spoken about by every athlete. How as a society we hardly speak about the challenges a female body faces and how more openness and dialogue will help younger women in the future.

It was one of the best sessions of the series. And it couldn’t have been better timed. Just a week after international women’s day was near perfect timing. Hope each one who watches the show benefits from it.
