Mitchell Owen had a dream debut in international cricket as his all-round performance helped Australia beat West Indies by 3 wickets in the first T20I at Kingston on July 20, 2025. The match was part of the ongoing Australia tour of West Indies.

Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first. Owen impressed right away with the ball, picking up the crucial wicket of Shai Hope, who was looking dangerous on 55. The debutant finished with 1/14 in two overs, showcasing great control and composure under pressure.

West Indies posted a competitive total of 189/8 in 20 overs, with Roston Chase leading the charge with a blistering 60 off 32 balls. Among the Australian bowlers, Ben Dwarshuis stood out, claiming 4 wickets to restrict the hosts.

Australia’s chase began on a shaky note, but Mitchell Owen made an impact once again—this time with the bat. Walking in at a tense moment, he delivered a fearless knock of 50 runs off just 27 balls, including six towering sixes. His aggressive half-century not only eased the pressure but also brought Australia within reach of the target.

Cameron Green also played a crucial role, scoring 51 off 26 balls to keep the momentum going. Australia eventually chased down the target in 18.5 overs, sealing a thrilling win.

For West Indies, Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie picked up two wickets each.

Mitchell Owen was deservedly named Player of the Match for his impactful debut with both bat and ball. Reflecting on the win, Owen said: “I’m firstly happy to get a win. For me, I’vebeen trying to play positive for the last six to eight months. Today was no different. Honestly, not too much changed. The only difference is five fielders out [while batting in the middle order].”
