Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Ian Healy has offered detailed feedback and constructive advice for Sam Konstas, the young Australian opener whose recent form in Tests has raised eyebrows. While Healy had earlier questioned the selection of Australia’s opening pair following the World Test Championship (WTC) final, he has now turned his attention specifically to Konstas, suggesting key areas for improvement.

Speaking on SEN Radio, Healy stressed that Konstas needs to find fluency in his batting technique during practice before Australia’s next Test in Jamaica.

“Sam Konstas is very jerky and short. He fell to a cut shot that had no fluency about it,” Healy said. “He’s just got to find his fluency in the next week at practice, get to Jamaica and enjoy every bit of it.”

Healy believes that a positive mindset can also aid the young batter. “If you set out to enjoy a week and then look back, it’s no coincidence you play quite well. It’s not very fun for him at the moment.”

Healy emphasises Footwork, Balance and Smart Practice

Healy went on to break down the technical areas that Konstas needs to address — mainly footwork, balance, and fluency in stroke play.

“He’s got to do the right amount of practice. He’s got to find the sweet spot — not overdo it, but feel some progress every session,” Healy advised. “Footwork, balance, and fluency. He threw the bat at it late and he was falling into the shot, and he chopped it on.”

Drawing comparisons with Cameron Green, who has worked hard to improve his Test game, Healy remained optimistic about Konstas’ potential to bounce back. “Cam Green has made some improvements, so why can’t Sam Konstas do the same?”

Constas hasn’t had the best start to his Test career. In the first Test, he was dismissed for just 3 and 5 in his two innings. He managed a better outing in the second Test’s first innings, scoring 25, but again fell cheaply for a duck in the second innings.
