Beau Webster played a crucial knock under pressure to rescue Australia from a tricky situation in the second Test against West Indies. Coming in at 93/4, and soon seeing his side slip to 110/5 after Travis Head’s dismissal, Webster stepped up with a composed innings that turned the momentum. He stitched a vital 112-run stand with wicketkeeper Alex Carey off 150 balls, which not only stabilised the innings but also gave the bowlers a competitive total to defend.
Webster scored 60 runs off 115 deliveries, including six boundaries and a six, showcasing grit and maturity during a tough phase of play.
As quoted in the Cricket Australia website after his innings, Webster shared how he approached the situation with a simple mindset and a desire to keep contributing to the team’s success.
“I try to keep out as many straight balls as I can and try and score when it’s not on the stumps,” he said.
“There’s not much to it other than that, it feels like it’s working, and I feel like I’m moving well. I’m just enjoying it, I’m having a really good time, it’s bloody fun playing for Australia and winning games of cricket. This is Test number six – I’ve had one loss (in the WTC final) and four wins, so it’s been a great start.”
Webster, who offers a handy option with both bat and ball, also spoke about his motivation to keep delivering for Australia in order to cement his place in the squad.
“When you contribute to wins for your country it’s a really nice feeling and that’s all I want to do, keep putting scores on the board and take some wickets and try to stay around (in the team) for as long as I can,” he added.
