Explosive West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is set to call time on his international career after the first two T20Is of the five-match series against Australia, both of which will take place at his home ground in Jamaica.
Russell has been included in the 16-man squad announced by Cricket West Indies on Wednesday. His decision to retire comes just months ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup, marking the end of a memorable chapter in West Indies cricket.
“Representing the West Indies has been one of the greatest honours of my life,” said Russell in a heartfelt statement. “As a child, I never imagined reaching this level, but as my love for the game grew, so did my ambition. That drive helped me improve and left me determined to make a lasting impact in maroon and to inspire the next generation.”
He added, “Playing at home, in front of my loved ones, has always been special. I want to finish my journey in international cricket on a high, showcasing my skills and serving as a role model for young Caribbean cricketers.”
Meanwhile, two newcomers—Jewel Andrew and Jediah Blades—have earned their maiden T20I call-ups, adding fresh energy to the squad.
Shai Hope will lead the team, which features seasoned stars like Jason Holder, Rovman Powell, Roston Chase, Akeal Hosein, and Shimron Hetmyer. The squad also sees the return of hard-hitting batters Evin Lewis and Sherfane Rutherford.
The five-match series will run from June 20 to 28. The first three matches are scheduled to be held at Sabina Park in Jamaica, with the final two fixtures taking place at Warner Park in St. Kitts.
