West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has been penalised for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second day of the first Test against Australia, which the visitors won by 159 runs in Bridgetown. Sammy has been fined 15% of his match fee for the offence.
The sanction was imposed after Sammy criticised one of the match officials during a media interaction at the end of Day 2.
The former T20 World Cup-winning captain of West Indies was found to have violated Article 2.7 of the Code, which is: “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an International Match or any Player, Player Support Personnel, Match Official or team participating in any International Match.”
Daren Sammy accepted the offence
One demerit point has also been added to Sammy’s disciplinary record.
Sammy accepted the offence and the sanction imposed by Javagal Srinath, who is a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Penalties for Level 1 charges include a fine of up to 50% of the match fee, one or two demerit points, and an official reprimand.
Australia won the match emphatically, with West Indies losing all their wickets in the final session of the third day. Chasing a target of 301, the hosts fell short. The second Test is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 3, in St. George’s.
