WI vs PAK: Nawaz, Talat guide Pakistan to comfortable win in ODI opener

After winning the T20I series 2–1, Pakistan beat the West Indies in the first match of the three-match ODI series by five wickets in Trinidad.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl first. After losing Brandon King early, Keacy Carty built a good partnership with Evin Lewis for the second wicket as they put up 77 runs. Shai Hope and Roston Chase also shared a solid stand of 64 runs. Lewis was the highest scorer for the West Indies with 60 runs from 62 balls, which included five fours and three sixes. 

Hope and Chase also scored fluent fifties, making 55 and 53 respectively, to take the West Indies to the 280-run mark in 49 overs. For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi was brilliant, taking 4 for 51 in his eight overs, including the important wicket of Hope.

In reply, Pakistan’s experienced duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan put together a 55-run partnership. Babar scored 47, while Rizwan made 53. After Rizwan’s dismissal, Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Talat came together and ensured Pakistan reached the target without any further loss of wickets. 

They added an unbeaten 104-run stand. Nawaz was the highest scorer for Pakistan with an unbeaten 63 off 54 balls at a strike rate of 116.67, which included five fours and three sixes. Talat remained unbeaten on 41 from 37 balls at a strike rate of 110.81, hitting four fours and a six. Nawaz was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant batting.

All three matches will be played on the same ground, with the next match scheduled for August 10.
