West Indies Women ended their 12-year drought and clinched the T20I series against South Africa with a 2-1 win after sealing victory in the third game at Cave Hill. Skipper Hayley Matthews once again delivered a standout performance, earning her second Player of the Match award. She was also named Player of the Series for her all-round efforts, scoring 147 runs and taking 2 wickets across the series.
In the first innings, young South African batter Miane Smit stood out with an unbeaten 59, helping her team post a respectable total of 147/6. Among the West Indies bowlers, Matthews (1/26), Karishma Ramharack (2/18), and Afy Fletcher (2/28) were the key performers.
The Caribbean side successfully chased down the target with nine balls to spare. Matthews, after impressing with the ball, opened the batting and scored a crucial 65 off 50 balls, setting the tone for the run chase. She was well supported by Shemaine Campbelle, who added 42 from 38 balls, and Chinelle Henry, who remained unbeaten on 20 off 11.
“Hayley played so well, it’s difficult to get her out” – Proteas Captain Applauds Matthews
South Africa Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt reflected on the match and the tour, acknowledging Matthews’ dominant display.
“Disappointed about today’s result, of course, particularly as I thought we had enough runs. But we didn’t get our bowling lines right – they scored too many runs square of the wicket and we got a few small things wrong. But Hayley played so well, it’s difficult to get her out. Overall on the tour I thought we unearthed some good young talent who put their hands up and made a good contribution to the team,” Wolvaardt said.
