New Zealand’s veteran batter Kane Williamson is set to return to international cricket in the upcoming ODI series against England. This will be his first outing for the national team since the 2025 Champions Trophy. Williamson shared his excitement about his comeback and said that discussions about his availability for the rest of the home summer are still going on.
Speaking to New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Friday, Williamson shared how he has been managing his career and personal life. “It’s just ongoing communication with New Zealand Cricket, Rob (Walter, head coach) and I’m grateful for that. For me,it’s a lot about the balance with family and time away but also the delicate balance of being a part of this team that I’ve really loved and enjoyed for such a long period of time,” Williamson said.
The former captain has opted out of the T20I series against Australia and also skipped the Zimbabwe tour to play county cricket. He said that spending time with his family has changed his perspective. “As your life situation changes as mine has… with three young children and the balance between where you spend your time and give your attention is really, really important to me.”
Williamson’s love for the game remains as strong as ever. “I still love the game, and have a strong desire to get better and train hard and offer whatever I can for the team,” he said. He also spoke about his long journey with New Zealand cricket and how he enjoyed being part of the team.
Looking ahead, Williamson said he’s not thinking too far about the future. “Not (looking) too far ahead… back in my mind there’s probably the ODI World Cup and Test cricket is pretty dear to me as well.”
He also praised current captains Mitchell Santner and Tom Latham, calling them “fantastic, experienced players” and said he’s looking forward to playing alongside them again.
