A visibly relaxed Srinjoy Bose, who filed his nomination for General Secretary of Mohun Bagan Club, caught up with me around midnight India time. After a rather acrimonious election campaign where Bose and Debasis Datta traded barbs for almost two months, both called a truce and decided to come together to bury the hatchet. “Everything can be resolved through dialogue, and while it is true that we had drifted apart and did not see eye to eye for some time, I am glad we managed to resolve our differences and come together for a cause,” said Bose.
When asked what were the five key points which he wanted to address as General Secretary, Bose stated his wish list in this longish conversation:
“First and foremost, we need to make sure that tickets are available to our supporters. The fans are at the core of this club and it is absolutely essential we take care of their interests. We will do our best to ensure maximum fans have access to tickets and are able to watch the team play.
Second, we have heard a slew of complaints that fans have suffered in the Salt Lake Stadium for want of water. During the heat, it is inhuman to not have access to water. We will make it one of our most important duties to ensure that fans don’t have to struggle for basics like water when they go to the stadium to watch their favourite team play.
Third, and this is at the core of my vision for the club, is the setting up of a women’s football team. The honourable CM of West Bengal, Ms Mamata Banerjee, is also very keen that a club like Mohun Bagan should have a women’s team and I will be speaking to Mr Sanjeev Goenka at the earliest on this matter. Mr Goenka and I share an excellent personal rapport and the women’s team is something I want to get done at the earliest.
Fourth, our cricket team hasn’t done as well as it should in recent times and it is something we will seek to address with immediate effect. Cricket is extremely important to us and we will take every step to resolve this.
Finally, we need to add to our digital presence. The website is in need of an urgent revamp and fans must get every detail on the website including club merchandise. I am not for once suggesting that we do everything at one go and get things done. But at least a start has to be made and at the earliest.”
Here’s wishing Bose and Debasis Datta all the very best in their renewed partnership.
