Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lanka lost the final of the Women’s Tri-Nation ODI Series earlier today to India in Colombo by 97 runs. While batting first, India posted 342/7, but in response, Sri Lanka crumbled and got bundled out for 245 in 48.2 overs. Athapaththu tried her best to lead the chase from the front but fell after scoring 51 (66).

The series did not go well for Athapaththu both as a skipper and as an individual. Though the home side managed a place in the final, many questions were raised over her decisions during different phases of the game. In five matches, she managed five wickets along with 139 runs with the bat, at an average of 27.80, including two fifties.

“We have to improve our fielding” – Chamari Athapaththu

During the post-match presentation, Athapaththu talked about their performance and claimed that work needs to be done before the upcoming ODI World Cup. She said: “First of all, congratulations to India, they played really well today. 300 plus is not easy to chase, we fought hard but we dropped some catches, and missed some runouts as well. Even our bowling unit struggled in the middle overs, but Smriti batted really well.”

“We have to improve our fielding, we dropped catches and missed runout chances throughout the tournament. SLC is trying to get new fielding coaches as well, so we need to work on it. We also need to improve our batting, we need some power-hitters, but work needs to be done before the World Cup,” she concluded.
