The Women’s Premier League in 2026 is reportedly set to start earlier than usual, in January. The fourth season of the tournament, which is usually played during the February–March slot, could be pushed forward so that it can finish before the men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
A source of TOI said, “The tournament is likely to start on Jan 6 or Jan 8, 2026.” Because of this change, the player auctionwhich is normally held in December, might take place in November.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said how the WPL has helped young players shine. “They’ve (India’s young women cricketers) been very exciting. Four or five years ago, there was a big gap between domestic and international cricket. But in the last five-six years, with back-to-back matches being telecast, young girls are much better prepared. Players like Kranti (Goud) and Pratika (Rawal) came in looking ready, not like they needed extra time. That’s a huge positive. The WPL has also played a big role in closing that gap. I just hope they keep performing this way,” she said before the India and Australia ODI in Mullanpur.
Head coach Amol Muzumdar had shared similar thoughts after India’s recent 3–2 T20I series win over England. “WPL has been an integral part of the progress of the players. There’s no doubt about it. But there are other tournaments as well in India which we really have a good look at. There are so many domestic players playing. WPL is just a part of the initiative of the BCCI. So, I think it’s been a happy hunting ground for us, the WPL. But at the same time, there are other tournaments which also take the importance,” he explained.
Mumbai Indians are the defending champions, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Giants, Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz also in the league.
