Delhi Capitals on Sunday continued their winning run by defeating Gujarat Giants while securing third win on the trot in the Women’s Premier League 2024. The trend this year has shown the toss winner having higher win rate, however, Gujarat Giants proved their inability to capitalise on the chances and continued their winless run in the tournament, succumbing to a 25-run defeat.
Meg Lanning leads by example
Meg Lanning has already attained legendary status in her playing career. She is considered one of the greats of the game. Known for her aggressive batting, Lanning is also hailed as one of the best captains in the business. A true leader, she had built a champion Australian team in the last few years, leading them to a world record 26 wins in a row. Lanning had showcased her prowess in the inaugural edition of the WPL, emerging as the highest run-getter with 345 runs from 9 innings. Walking in to bat as an opener and later having had half of the batting lineup crumble, Meg had a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. But being the leader that she is, Lanning took complete charge of Delhi Capitals’ innings and scored 55 off 41 balls with a strike rate of 134.15. Taking Delhi Capitals over the line with a total of 163 runs on the scoreboard.
Meghna Singh shines with the ball
Having initially faced disappointment when she didn’t attract any bids in the first season, Meghna Singh looks determined to make a strong comeback in the second season after being snapped up by Gujarat Giants for INR 30 lakhs. With a wealth of experience behind her, Meghna is excited to showcase her talent once again and leave a lasting impression on the big stage. Even though Delhi Capitals came out victorious, Singh proved her mettle by scalping three wickets. Meghna was the most penetrative bowler out of GG’s entire bowling lineup considering that she sent Meg Lanning, Shafali Varma and Alice Capsey back to the pavilion, leaving DC on the backfoot for a while.
Radha Yadav proves dangerous once again
Radha Yadav found herself in the spotlight when the Delhi Capitals secured her for the base price of INR 40 lakhs in the inaugural WPL auction. At just 23 years old, she plays a crucial role in Delhi’s spin department. With her involvement in two T20 World Cup campaigns 2018 and 2020, Radha brings a wealth of experience to the team. Known for her accurate bowling, she possesses a deceptive flight and a dangerous arm ball. She proved exactly that when she restricted the Gujarat Giants batting lineup from causing any serious damage to the scoreboard. Yadav ended the match as the best bowler for DC having picked up three wickets, while only giving away 20 runs and bowling with an economy of 5.00. With her lethal bowling she gave no chance for the GG batters to settle in, taking wickets in quick succession. She continues to prove her prowess with the ball throughout the tournament, her confidence solidified by the purple cap that she proudly adorns currently.
