Australia’s Beau Webster showcased great composure on Day 1 of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 at Lord’s, saving his team with a fighting 72-run knock under pressure. His strong performance earned high praise from ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting, who lauded the Tasmanian’s temperament and readiness for the big stage.“He just looked completely ready” Ponting said about Webster’s maturity at the crease. It was just his fourth Test, but the 31-year-old all-rounder showed composure beyond his experience. He was the top scorer for Australia and anchored them to 212 runs on a testing pitch.
Webster’s journey in Test cricket started similarly, with 57 runs on debut during the series decider against India in Sydney earlier this year. Coming in at 39/4, he helped push Australia to 181 runs, which contributed to their hard-fought victory.
“Webster was able to maintain his own natural style of play” – Ponting
In London, he repeated that gritty effort, taking early pressure and then counter-attacking with confidence. “You take those 70-odd runs out, that scorecard looks a whole lot different,” Ponting told ICC Digital. “I think that says a lot about how comfortable he is in his own game right now and even the comfort he has of being in the Australian middle order.”
Despite losing batters around him, Webster remained calm. “Although Australia were in a little bit of trouble, wickets were falling… (Webster) was able to go out there and maintain his own natural style of play and play the way that he wanted to play and try and be aggressive and try and put some pressure back on the South African bowlers.”
Ponting added, “The other thing (is that) although the wicket was doing something—and we know the Dukes ball will do something in early June in the UK—it just goes to show that if you do get in and get set like Smith and Beau did, then regardless of the conditions, you can still make some big scores.”
