Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne will link up with Glamorgan for a short stint, the county confirmed on Thursday (May 8), ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa in June.

Labuschagne will be available for just two County Championship matches, which are expected to serve as preparation for the big-ticket clash at Lord’s.

He will feature in Glamorgan’s home fixtures against Northamptonshire and Middlesex, stepping in as one of the two overseas players in the eleven, alongside Asitha Fernando, and replacing Colin Ingram during this short stint.

“It’s fantastic to have Marnus back,” said Mark Wallace, Glamorgan’s director of cricket. “He’s become part of the club’s fabric over the years. While his stay will be brief, it offers Colin a chance to rest ahead of the T20 Blast.”

Speculation continues to grow around Labuschagne possibly opening the batting with his fellow Queenslander Usman Khawaja in the WTC final, as selectors are not looking at Sam Konstas and they are also finding ways to accommodate the returning Cameron Green. Though Labuschagne has never opened in Tests, a reshuffle could be on the cards following Travis Head’s move back to the middle order, who was promoted to open the batting in Sri Lanka.

Other Australians, including Green and Beau Webster, are also playing in the County Championship to familiarise themselves with English conditions ahead of the final.

Cricket Australia is expected to unveil their 15-man squad for the WTC final against South Africa at Lord’s on June 11, with the announcement likely on Monday.
